DESCRIPTION:photos & prints by Andrea Cacase \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSoft animal is Andrea Cacase’s first solo exhibition featuring photographs and prints from the past few years. Her photography consists of landscapes\, portraits\, and still lifes\, all taken on Polaroid film. The prints are a mix of photo emulsion transfers\, monotypes\, and etchings. \n\n\n\nPoetry is a big source of inspiration for Cacase’s work. The title of the show comes from the Mary Oliver poem Wild Geese. In the poem\, Oliver compares the struggle of the human experience to the natural world’s ability to move along effortlessly. She advices the reader to “let the soft animal of your body love what it loves.” The poem celebrates nature’s grandeur and its ability to remind people\, that even at their lowest moments\, they’re part of something vast and meaningful. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe show also includes a collaborative project with friend and sculptor Tim Bearse entitled Mood of the Mason. Together they created a series of unique site-specific frames to display her images. The piece marries the soft etherial world of Cacase’s photography\, with the rough hard-edged surfaces of woodworking and masonry. It’s a nod to the historic buildings in downtown New Bedford and the ways in which they’ve been restored and repurposed for our contemporary pursuits. \n\n\n\nThe frames were created using various digital fabrication techniques. Twenty locations were selected on the 40 foot rock wall located within the Co-Creative Center. Each location on the wall was then scanned and turned into a 3D model. The 3D models were then used to carve out the rock formations into the backs of 20 wooden blocks using a CNC router. Each frame nestles perfectly into the wall while displaying the various groupings of images. The piece requires the viewer to get up close and personal with each photo and frame to take in their unique shapes and forms.

SUMMARY:Through My Mind’s Eye - Kim Barry
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception AHA! Night April 11 \n\n\n\n“Through My Mind’s Eye” is an exhibition of oil paintings\, encaustic collages\, and clay sculpture. I am inspired by the natural world which I ingest and synthesize through my creative processes. My memories\, emotions\, imagination take hold of subjects such as seed pods\, fruit\, veggies\, and flowers which are transformed into vivid\, gestural paintings\, textural wax collage or dynamic clay sculptures. Peppers will have intimate relationships\, garlic explode into life and oranges pulsate with lurid\, visceral color referencing internal  body parts. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKim Barry is a painter\, potter\, sculptor\, and art educator. She graduated from Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Sculpture and from University of Massachusetts/Dartmouth with an MFA in Painting. Kim has lived in the south coast of Massachusetts most of her life and is a member of Hatch Street Studios in New Bedford\, South Coast Artist\, an exhibiting and teaching member of the Providence Art Club\, Rogers Gallery in Mattapoisett\, The Drawing Room in New Bedford\, Westport Art Group\, Marion Art Center\, Cape Cod Cultural Center\, and owner of Clay Trout Pottery in Mattapoisett. Her work is informed by the beautiful\, south coast environment and the natural objects she encounters.  Ms. Barry states\, “My pockets are always full of shells and the bits I discover along my walks. Through deep observation and my intimate response to the natural world\,  I find a bounty of inspiration for my paintings. My subject matter such as fruits\, flowers\, veggies\, or shells can often reference the human form\, gesture\, memory\, emotion\, sensuality or simply capture the energy of a time and place.” Ms. Barry also produces a line of sculpted tile and hand-thrown plant pots at her Clay Trout Pottery Studio in Mattapoisett.

SUMMARY:Co-Creative Sessions: Cedric “Vice1” Douglas
DESCRIPTION:Cedric “Vise1” Douglas is Artist\, Designer\, Muralist\, and Social Interventionist he was born in Boston Massachusetts\, by immigrant parents from Jamaica. He received a BFA in Graphic Design from the Massachusetts College Of Art and Design. He currently resides in New Bedford Massachusetts with his art studio in Abington Massachusetts at the Arnold Shoe Factory. His first experience with public art was writing his name creatively on abandoned spaces.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 2014 Cedric and his partner Julia Roth founded The Up Truck\, a mobile art lab designed to engage underserved communities\, Douglas is widely recognized for his large-scale social realism murals and portraits are highly regarded by a broad range of audiences\, and communities. His large-scale murals can be found throughout New England\, from New Bedford Mass\, to Port Au Prince\, Haiti. Douglas’s most recent public art project\, “Street Memorials” takes a hard look at racial injustice and its deadly impact on the black community\, while “The People’s Memorial Project” requires we rethink the future of memorials and monuments in the United States. Douglas’s commitment to the arts is exemplified by his volunteer work. He presently sits on the board and is an active member of multiple Boston-based art organizations including\, The Celebrity Series\, advisory committee\, and\, Mass Creative community engagement advisory committee. \n\n\n\nCo-Creative Sessions is a free and accessible online series geared to enrich\, educate and connect creatives through a series of workshops and training sessions. SUMMARY:Co-Creative Sessions: Matt Mignanelli\, Artist
DESCRIPTION:Matt Mignanelli’s paintings are composed of gradated fields of blue\, gestural dissections\, and geometric forms inspired by light\, shadow\, and architectural elements. Informed by the urban landscape and vistas from the natural world these works examine the duality of modern life with emotional complexity. Mignanelli’s process combines incredibly detailed\, methodical hand-painting\, with references to utilitarian painting applications in municipal and industrial contexts\, abutted by fields of aqueous and luminescent color. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEqually important to Mignanelli’s practice is the examination of the potential and power of the monochrome. In particular\, his work embraces a deep saturation of the color blue. While at first glance the paintings appear transporting\, with stacks of brick-like forms set against the intense color of the enamel house paint\, further inspection reveals a thoughtful engagement with light and shadow\, depth and density\, and spatial perception. Through the use of enamel and the color blue which appears on mailboxes\, these functional uses of paint within the urban environment are continually referenced. Freely exploring permutations of form and recording the element of chance associated with my freehand process in organically accumulated splashes and drips of paint on the painting’s surface\, brings forth a sense of freedom. The spontaneity that emerges makes the paintings feel alive. \n\n\n\nCreating paintings within a strict set of parameters has defined Mignanelli’s project\, and is a pursuit of purity through thought and a constant evaluation of space and emotion. The works aspire to continue that investigation and push the understanding of what it means to visualize feelings in paint. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCo-Creative Sessions is a free and accessible online series geared to enrich\, educate and connect creatives through a series of workshops and training sessions.
