SUMMARY:Co-Creative Sessions: Pay Equity and Justice for Freelancers Workshop
DESCRIPTION:What hourly pay provided to a freelancer amounts to minimum wage for an employee\, a living wage or a reasonable professional wage? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhile it is hard to be precise it is possible to create reasonable estimates. We believe that funders\, freelancers and the organizations that hire them have a role to play in creating equity and justice in freelancer pay.  \n\n\n\nThis workshop is for freelancers\, organizations that hire them and funders who fund freelance pay. It will include discussions of the compensation research\, explanations of the various costs freelancers are responsible for that employers cover for wage earners and calculations of the real value of freelance pay when freelance costs for taxes and other benefits are taken into account. It will also cover the rules for classifying a position as freelance or employee. A calculator for translating freelance hourly wage to hourly wage equivalent will also be provided. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nThe program will be held on Zoom. Eric received both his undergraduate degree in Business Administration and his graduate degree in Information Systems from Northeastern University. A resident of Roxbury\, he spent the early part of his career in educational technology\, including leadership roles at Lesley University and Boston Public Schools. From an early career in human services to a stint in politics and a couple of decades in policy development in childrens’ services and health care he has worn many professional hats. He started his own consulting company a couple of years out of college\, first doing policy development and management consulting\, then moving into database development. Basically\, everything was centered around his nature as a problem solver. He continues to run the consulting company and his other small businesses as well. Over the years he has learned a lot about running businesses\, being a working artist and how to avoid being taken advantage of as an artist and a freelancer.

She attended the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth College of Visual and Performing Art\, where she earned a BFA in Sculpture. She went on to earn her MFA from Boston University’s College of Fine Art. Kate has shown her work nationally and is currently in several private collections. She participated and performed in Art in Odd Places: BODY\, an international performance art festival in NYC 2018. And was included in the Cambridge Art Association’s 2019 Emerging Artist Exhibition.  \n\n\n\nKate has been an art educator in public charter schools and art organizations across the Southcoast for the past ten years. Her pedagogy focuses on process\, building strong studio habits within her scholars\, and art history through a lens of inclusion and social justice. When she’s not teaching middle school\, she’s holed up in her studio with a cup of coffee.

Outside OSS\, Tobey also works as a curriculum specialist\, educational consultant and outdoor classroom designer. Passionate about providing learning experiences centered on choice and voice and agency\, she works to inspire her students’ intrinsic sense of wonder and desire to make a difference in their world. SUMMARY:Meditation Awareness
DESCRIPTION:Neutralize Negativity through Meditation and Loving Awareness \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis workshop is designed to neutralize the negativity that we often experience on planet earth by creating a container of understanding\, equipping the participant with mental tools to help flip moments that are perceived as negative into an opportunity of new growth. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis workshop will begin with a group meditation created to drop into our heart center and clear our energy field. I will be using meditation music that I produced to enhance the experience. After meditation I will teach a brief lesson on techniques I learned from studying with the HeartMath Institute. These are simple breathing techniques to evaluate how we are feeling and to learn to shift into a more optimal state of being.  \n\n\n\nParticipants will then be offered a writing prompt to access ideas they are holding within\, and then we will apply these breathing techniques to help process what we discover about ourselves. \n\n\n\nThe workshop will conclude with a group share so we can collectively learn from each other’s experience. The participant will leave equipped with tools to better understand their emotions and how to shift back to a calm neutral center through any circumstance.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAustin Pereira is a meditation guide\, music producer\, sound healer\, and certified yoga teacher. He specializes in curating events that bring people together to explore their creativity and the depths of what is possible. He also holds certifications in Energy Medicine and from the HeartMath Institute for stress\, anxiety\, and self regulation. He aims to create safe spaces for self exploration and community building in everything he does.

A longtime New Bedford artist\, Miś has been Executive Director of DATMA since 2018 and launched it’s inaugural program season entitled\, Summer Winds. She has also worked at peer art institutions such as Society of Arts & Crafts in Boston\, New Bedford Art Museum\, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Ise\, ME\, and the Visual Art Center of Richmond\, VA. Miś received her MFA in Jewelry/Metals from UMass Dartmouth and her BFA in Craft/Material Studies from VCU. She maintains her metalsmithing practice at Hatch Street Studios. Lindsay represents DATMA on the AHA! Steering Committee and the Fall River Arts & Culture Council\, FRACC. One motive that keeps her in the SouthCoast is New Bedford’s incredible ability to collaborate. \n\n\n\nVESSELS Mini-Doc was created by MASARY Studios. Produced by MASARY Studios and DATMAVessels film site \n\n\n\nThis film brings viewers behind the scenes in their mini-documentary entitled\, VESSELS\, that tells the story of the fishing industry\, its vessels\, DATMA\, New Bedford\, the art piece VESSELS\, and how all interconnected to create the contemporary artwork. This mini-documentary is especially meaningful to us\, because the artists\, Samo Okerstrom-Lang and Ryan Edwards\, dedicated this film to our co-founder\, Roger Mandle. Kate has a strong interest in organizational culture and human connection; she views art as a valuable tool that helps her clients connect their employees and visitors to their values\, culture\, and community. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKelly Filocco \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs a senior art consultant at Boston Art\, Kelly Filocco has been developing art programs for corporations\, healthcare institutions\, and multi-family buildings in the Boston area for over fourteen years. A graduate of Northeastern University with a degree in business and a concentration in marketing\, Kelly approaches her projects with a deep appreciation for the benefits that a carefully-chosen art program can have on the productivity and well-being of her clients. Kelly’s experience ranges from large-scale\, highly detailed projects to collection management advice for clients with extensive existing collections. \n\n\n\nKelly has chosen the artwork and managed the collections of Boston Scientific\, Massachusetts General Hospital\, Brigham and Women’s Hospital\, 345 Harrison\, and Maine Medical Center. She lives outside of Boston with her husband and daughter.

As a native of Cabo Verde\, Iva channels her nostalgic love of her birthplace\, tapping into her culturally diverse identity\, to call for justice\, unity\, and liberation through her artistic works. She is the author of Essence\, Tones\, Whispers\, and Shouts\, a collection of poetry in which she draws on nature\, past experiences\, and her vision for an illuminated and inclusive world. She has performed her pieces at various locations throughout the nation. Iva is a featured artist in the Women Anthem “Take Back the Power” music video\, a partnership with the National Parks\, celebrating the centennial anniversary of women’s right to vote in 2020. Iva was awarded the Artist-in-Residence at the New Bedford Whaling National Park.  Outside of being an artist\, Iva is a licensed social worker and educator. Currently\, she serves as the Director of Bristol Community College Women’s Center and adjunct faculty for the college.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlison Wells\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOriginally from Trinidad & Tobago\, Alison Wells relocated from the Caribbean to the South coast of Massachusetts in 2004 to pursue a Masters Degree in Fine Art Painting at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Wells is now living and working as an Artist and Art Educator in New Bedford Massachusetts. \n\n\n\nWells was selected to exhibit her Urban Organic series at the 2010 World Exposition in Shanghai\, China. In 2014 she received the ‘Assets for Artists’ grant from MassMoca\, which allowed her the opportunity to open her very own Art Gallery & Studio at 106 William St. New Bedford MA. Wells also teaches private and group Art classes & workshops from her art studio.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlison’s paintings are part of private\, public and corporate collections.
